Zip.ca also relies on member feedback for its rating system.
Mr. Anderson says this makes it more vibrant and interactive
than if reviews were posted by movie experts. The company also
sponsors many Canadian film festivals and has an open offer to
make all the screened films at each event available for rental.
We re trying to develop a more content-rich
experience for movie lovers, Mr. Anderson says.
It s a bit of a different vision for the online
experience. credit pacific service union
Turnaround, or the time it takes to process returns and send
out a replacement, is another key component of customer
service. Whereas most online DVD rental companies rely
exclusively on postal service for delivery, Zip.ca has worked
with Canada Post, airlines and other delivery providers to
capture the holy grail of order fulfillment: local performance
delivery standard of two days. It recently achieved that goal
in 80% of Canadian cities and is working on the rest. credit first service union
Quick turnaround is tremendously important for Zip.ca s
members, Mr. Anderson says: It means they re getting
about 50% more movies per month than when we started in
February. But fast turnaround is also a substantial
challenge. The company must process 13, 000 DVDs each day,
satisfy customer requests including ASAP lists, and then ship
orders to members spread across the second-largest country in
the world. In addition, it must initiate new members and
continuously strive to build an industry-best movie
library. card credit mobile service
Rising to that challenge is what will separate Zip.ca from
its competition, says Mr. Anderson. The same holds true for
anyone trying a similar venture, he adds. You have to
deliver or you re cutting corners and corrupting the
concept. . card credit discover service

Dot-com revival creates new players Oct 28, 2004 The last
couple of years have been tough for e-business, but things may
be looking up, insiders say. When the optimism of the
late-1990s dot-com boom turned into a dot-com bust in 2001,
many companies fell by the wayside. A lot of the businesses
that thought tacking .com on to the end of a
business name would bring fame and fortune are gone, but those
with solid business plans to take advantage of the
Internet s possibilities - or help others do so - have
survived. This year, there are even some promising new ventures
appearing. credit public service union
Launched in 1999, MyMusic.com was a fairly typical dot-com
startup. An online CD store, it was a spinoff from CD
Warehouse, a local brick-and-mortar chain in business since
1991. MyMusic differs from many startups of the period in one
key respect: it s still around. Founder and co-CEO Steve
Bleeker says the operation has a staff of 25 to 30 employees
and has expanded from retailing CDs online into two other
areas: running back-end fulfillment for other online retailers,
including the Chapters Indigo books and music chain; and
selling recordings to small record stores through a separate
business-to-business site. Each of these areas accounts for
about one-third of the company s business, Mr. Bleeker
says, with the original business-to-consumer aspect making up
the remaining third. card credit processing service
Mr. Bleeker says his company survived the dot-com bust for
two reasons. First, Most of our competition invested
heavily in infrastructure and staff and inventory and
everything else in anticipation of the business that would
come, whereas we just scaled in baby steps as the business
grew. Second, MyMusic s founders saw the online
operation as an extension of their traditional business and
realized the key to success was not technology, but customer
service, he says. center credit service union
Privately held MyMusic won t release revenue figures,
but Mr. Bleeker says, We re doing millions of dollars
in sales . Zip.ca is also proof the days of dot-com
startups are not over. Launched in February, it s an online
service offering unlimited DVD rentals - four at a time for as
short or as long a period as the consumer likes - for a flat
monthly fee. Members choose their titles on the web and
they re shipped free anywhere in Canada. card credit service wireless
Zip.ca is the newest subsidiary of Momentous.ca, an
Ottawa-based company founded in 1995 as Romel Corp.
Momentous businesses include domain-name registrar
Internic.ca and other ventures that deal with Internet domain
names. credit security service union
Momentous began looking at the idea of an online DVD rental
business last year, says Rick Anderson, Zip.ca s president
and chief executive. Although Wal-Mart, Blockbuster Video and
others run similar services in the United States and Europe,
there was no national service in Canada. Today, Canada has
about a dozen online DVD rental services, but Mr. Anderson says
Zip.ca is by far the biggest. Momentous expertise in
transaction processing and development services has helped the
subsidiary cope with rapid growth, which has seen shipments
increase from 1, 000 to 1, 500 DVDs a day in the spring, to 5,
000 to 6, 000 a day now, while staff grew from six to about
30. credit report service
Heavyweights such as Wal-Mart and Blockbuster will enter the
Canadian market, but Mr. Anderson says Zip.ca will be ready,
with competitive pricing and a selection that is second
to none . Say dot-com and most people think of a company
that sells something on the web. But e-business is more than
that. Online retailers rely on others for technology and
services to run their business and some of the companies
providing those services are among the most successful ventures
spawned by the web. blogspot com christian
Watchfire Corp. was founded in Kanata in 1996, originally as
Tetranet Software, to offer software for testing web sites.
Today, the company has broadened its focus to offer software
that not only checks for problems such as broken links and
transactions that don t work, but also deals with security,
ensures compliance with privacy rules, monitors visitor
behaviour and performs other management functions. christian counseling credit
The company has acquired three firms this year, says Michael
Weider, chairman and chief technical officer. Now with 175
employees, Watchfire has moved its official headquarters to the
Boston area, but its largest concentration of employees is
still in Kanata, Mr. Weider says. credit federal service union
Thanks to privacy legislation in a number of countries,
software to ensure compliance with the new laws is the
firm s fastest-growing business. Watchfire does about 80
per cent of its business in the U.S., but Mr. Weider sees
potential for growth in Europe and Asia. credit monitoring service
The dot-com bust was tough, says Mr. Weider, but
Watchfire s products addressed a need that existed before
the boom and is still present today. Also, most of its
customers are large firms that don t depend purely on
e-commerce revenue. credit division service
HumanResolve Inc. grew out of consulting work for Industry
Canada. Francis Preston helped the department s Canada
Business Service Centre improve its online services with
technology that allows operators to guide visitors through
government web pages on the phone or using on-screen text chat.
HumanResolve now offers a hosted service allowing its customers
to add such features to their own web sites. card credit online service
While talking with a customer, an operator can take control
of the customer s web browser, direct it to certain web
pages and even help the customer fill in forms, says Mr.
Preston, now HumanResolve s president and chief technology
officer. The technology has applications in e-commerce,
government services, customer support and other areas. consumer counseling credit inc
The four-employee startup is focusing its marketing in
Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto initially, says chief executive
Don Henderson, but sees potential for international markets.
HumanResolve is also developing MyPersonalCircle, a free web
service that lets one computer user direct another s
browser so both can view the same pages simultaneously. It also
includes a chat capability. Mr. Henderson says HumanResolve
hopes to make advertising on the MyPersonalCircle web site pay
for the service. card credit fleet service

THIS WEEK S TOP RATED REVIEWS The Bucket List
AMAZING! - Ricardo (Edmonton, AB) I
seldom give a movie 5 stars, but this one definitely was closer
to 5 than to 4, so, since there is no 4 1/2, I will go with 5.
Granted, when you see the names of the two main actors, you
know at least the movie will be okay, but these two men shone
brightly on this movie. The parts were played just perfectly,
no overacting, no need for special effects, no need for a huge
cast, just two men talking to each other most of the time and
still making us feel like we were part of the conversation. ...
