Mr. Annan says the cause of worldwide freedom can only be advanced if countries work together to reform the United Nations. Amy Katz reports on some Washington reaction to the reform plan.U.S. Congressman Tom Lantos of California, a Democrat, thinks many of the recommendations in the U.N. reform plan are excellent. At a Voice of America Newsmaker news conference on Tuesday he cited fiscal accountability and changing the Human Rights Commission as two of the most important. Another important recommendation, Mr. Lantos says, is getting the U.N.'s 191 member nations to agree on the definition of "terrorism."

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on Thursday backed a resolution by the UN nuclear watchdog agency calling on Iran to halt nuclear fuel work, a demand Tehran has dismissed as absurd. The ICC has been a pioneering member of the Compact. As early as February 1998 a delegation of 25 corporate executives met with Kofi Annan and other senior UN officials and issued a joint statement promising closer collaboration. [3] According to the ICC, "the two groups resolved to form a close global partnership to secure greater input from ICC member companies into the UN' making." [4]
