IRS Gets Wise to Phishing Scams

Credit First Service Union (AXcess News) Reno, NV - Recently, AXcess News received several e-mails saying that the IRS had a check waiting us and all we had to do was click on this link. We contacted the Internal Revenue Service in an attempt to forward the message to them. We found no e-mail address to communicate with and instead, we found detailed and hard to find instructions about using an IRS form they requested to be filled out. But as to the fake e-mail, they suggested we contact the FBI. (gawk!)

Card Credit Mobile Service Today, we received an e-mail from the IRS, letting us know they now were taking phishing more seriously and provided an e-mail address to forwardphony messages to and detailed, but much simpler instructions than before on how to foward the phishing message to the government. What is Phishing and How Can I Avoid It Phishing is an attempt to impersonate a company in an electronic communication, such as email or instant messaging. mail is sent claiming to be a legitimate company in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft. mail directs the user to visit a web site where they are asked to update personal information, such as passwords and credit card, social security, and bank account numbers, etc. The web site, however, is bogus and set up only to steal the user's information.

"Phishing" is a form of Internet fraud that utilizes spoofed e–mails to lead the recipient to a fake website. Instructions on how to properly submit one of these communications to the IRS may be found on the IRS Web site at www.irs.gov. Enter the term phishing in the search box in the upper right hand corner. Then open the article titled "How to Protect Yourself from Suspicious E-Mails" and scroll through it until you find the instructions. Following these instructions helps ensure that the bogus e-mails relayed by taxpayers retain critical elements found in the original e-mail. The IRS can use the information, URLs and links in the bogus e-mails to trace the hosting Web sites and alert authorities to help shut down these fraudulent sites.

Card Credit Processing Service However, due to the volume the new mailbox is expected to receive, the IRS will not be able to acknowledge receipt or reply to taxpayers who submit their bogus e-mails. The phishing@irs.gov mailbox is only for suspicious e-mails and not for general taxpayer contact or inquiries.

To date, investigations by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration have identified sites hosting more than two dozen IRS-related phishing scams. These scam Web sites have been located in at least 20 different countries including the United States.

In addition, e-mail addresses ending with ".edu" users in the education community currently seem to be heavily targeted.
