Hunterdon Freeholders OK Funds To Preserve 532 More Acres

Credit Pacific Service Union Another 532 acres of open space have been approved for preservation and funding by the freeholders.

The Board of Chosen Freeholders on Wednesday set aside $600, acre tract off of Route 532 in Waretown from being developed. It's the final step before making the open space purchase. County officials said Ocean Township resident Robert E. Johnson currently owns the tract, thirds of a mile of frontage along fast developing Route 532. The county negotiated a sale price of $1.3 million to buy the land from Johnson, according to Freeholder Director John Bartlett.

Credit First Service Union Four municipal grant applications to preserve properties totaling 287 acres received approval or conditional approval from the freeholders on Tuesday. In addition, the board approved a joint purchase agreement for another 265 acres with Lebanon Township, Hunterdon Land Trust Alliance, the New Jersey Water Supply Authority, state Department of Environmental Protection, and the Washington Township Land Trust of Morris County for property known as "Crystal Springs." The county's share of this purchase, which is intended to protect Spruce Run and the associated headwaters, is $413,852.

Five years ago, New Jersey voters approved the Garden State Preservation Trust Fund, a decades worth of money to preserve a million acres of open space and farmland. The fund made $98 million available for preservation each year for ten years. Since then, over 300, 000 acres have been added to New Jerseys inventory of preserved lands, including local parks, wetlands, farmlands and forests. So when it came time to ask voters to amend the Garden State Preservation Trust to take advantage of low interest rates, they did it again this Fall, 1!

Center Credit Service Union # Raritan Township -- conditional approval for $82,187 (allocation for 2002) to acquire 84 acres bounded by Old York and Dory Dilts roads. The county will also be putting money toward this purchase and has not yet finished all it needs to do regarding the application.
