Credit Public Service Union Although mosquitoes are nipping at people's nerves this week, local mosquito commission officials say their swarming populations are more or less in check this season. With the sudden change in temperature, carpenter ants have emerged as Morris County's leading six-legged pests.
Description Lucas Nickle's the new kid in town and the local bully, Steve, makes sure he knows it. Lucas gets so fed up with being bullied, he takes out his frustration on ants in his backyard in hilarious ways, like squirting them with his garden hose or stamping on the ant hill. The ants are understandably fed up with this and Zoc the ant wizard uses a potion to shrink him down to ant size! Lucas is sentenced to hard labor in the ruins and learns to be more compassionate to ants. He becomes an ant friend, then must become an ant hero when Stan Beals, the local pest control guy, who's an even bigger bully, comes to wipe out the entire colony. An "ants vs pest control" battle ensues and Zoc reluctantly accepts that Lucas may be the ants' only chance of survival.
Card Credit Processing Service Local exterminators are waging war against armies of ants, which professional bug-killers claim are today's top insect enemy.
Center Credit Service Union Alan Szatkowski, the 15-year owner of Pyramid Termite & Pest Control, said his company went quickly from no ant complaints to 15 to 20 phone calls a day. Szatkowski said he believes the sudden change in the temperature has lured winter-weary ants from their nests.
Card Credit Service Wireless "I compare it to humans," he said. "We go from wearing winter coats to shorts and bathing suits in one day. We're happy, and the bugs are happy."
Credit Security Service Union Bill Corvelli, owner of Corvelli Termite & Pest Control, has noticed a similar pattern this week. He said there could be several reasons for the sudden increase in ant complaints.
Credit Report Service "With the humidity and all the rain, there is a lot of wetness coming in and breaking up their nests," he said. "There are also scavengers going into the house and looking for food. Ants can forage about 100 yards. You could have ants coming in from a nest in your neighbor's yard. That's why it's good to treat the yard with a perimeter spray to stop them before they start nesting in the house."
Blogspot Com Christian Corvelli also said heavy June rains may have pushed some ants out of their nests in search of new homes.
Christian Counseling Credit "Heavy rains will break up low-lying nests in places like patios or railroad ties," he said.
Credit Federal Service Union Szatkowski said most calls he receives are to report carpenter ants; however, pavement and picnic ants also have shown up as unwelcome guests.
Credit Monitoring Service Exterminators aren't the only businesses handling ant complaints. Hardware stores also have noticed a sudden increase in ant trap and ant spray sales.
Credit Division Service Jeff Cook, owner of Mendham Hardware & Paint, has sold about 150 ant traps in the past few weeks, not to mention sprays and powders.
Card Credit Online Service "We always sell ant products, but it seems like in the last three weeks we've sold an awful lot," Cook said.
Consumer Counseling Credit Inc Scott Rumer of Rockaway first noticed an ant problem in his yard two weeks ago. He finally decided to take action and bought ant spray.
Card Credit Fleet Service "There's a lot of black carpenter ants outside by my driveway," he said as he purchased the spray in Rockaway Sentry Hardware on Main Street. "I think it's from all the rain."
Card Consolidation Credit Rockaway Sentry Hardware co-owners Walt and Richard Sommerkorn were not surprised by Rumer's ant problems. Over the past two weeks, they have seen a large increase in the sales of ant extermination products. One day last week, they sold out of ant spray.
Credit Free Online Report "Usually, they come out right about now," Richard Sommerkorn said, "But with all the heavy rains, there seems to be double or triple the normal amount."
Credit Federal First Service Just because ants appear to be the primary pest of the season doesn't mean there aren't mosquitoes waiting to bite.
Consumer Credit Service Mark Slaff, superintendent of the Morris County Mosquito Commission, said mosquitoes are under control, but will remain a nuisance.
Center Credit Family Service "Obviously, with the snowy winter and early rain, we started off with a moderately high level of mosquitoes," he said.
Credit Reporting Service "But the mosquitoes have been fairly well contained. We only had problems in just a few areas -- East Hanover, Montville, Lincoln Park and Florham Park."
Cca Credit Division Service Although the Aedes vexan mosquito likely will be a bother this Fourth of July, Slaff has seen far worse summers.
Credit Free Report Service "2001 was much worse," he said. "So was 1998, and 1996 was beyond belief."
Card Credit Customer Discover Larry Ferchak, superintendent of the Essex County Mosquito Commission, also noted a considerable decrease in the mosquito population compared with previous years.
Credit Repair Report Service "In our mosquito traps, at one point in July 2001, we were pulling up over 1,000 vexans per night," he said. "We had seven traps along the Passaic River. Now we're picking up 100 to 200, which is a problem, but it is not as bad."
Credit Legal Repair Service Slaff and Ferchak said they believe the mosquito population has been kept down by stepped-up control efforts prompted by fears of the mosquito-borne West Nile virus.
Cic Credit Monitoring Service Ferchak also attributed the low numbers to the prolonged cold weather. Flood water mosquitoes generally need 60- to 70-degree weather in order to hatch -- a temperature that Morris and Essex counties have not seen for most of June.
Ccs Credit Division Service "Last year at this time, we had 90-degree weather, so we only had a five-day window (to spray breeding pools) before the mosquitoes hatched," he said. "This year, we had a 10- to 12-day window because the temperatures were so low. That gave us a little more time."
Credit Service Union Worker Wayne Crans, a research professor and director of the Mosquito Control Center at Rutgers University, said the Aedes vexan is a short-term problem.
1st Credit Service Union "Morris and Essex counties have excellent mosquito control," he said. "There will be two to three more weeks of annoyance and then they'll dry off on their own."
Card Chase Credit Customer Until then, Morris County residents should take the regular precautions: wearing bug spray and long-sleeved clothing, if they can bear the summer heat. People should be particularly careful, however, not to drop food crumbs outside unless they want their homes to become the hub for a colony of ants.
Card Chase Credit Service But seeing some ants in the house does not mean they have moved in for good. The ants may just be foraging.
Citi Credit Monitoring Service In order to tell whether the ants have colonized inside, homeowners should keep their eyes peeled for frass--a mixture of saw dust and dead insect body parts.
Credit Plus Service Union "Carpenter ants colonize in wood and they will chew it out," Corvelli said. "If you're lucky enough to find frass in your home, then you can probably find their nest."
