The email, which claims to be from the IRS, offers a bogus refund and directs the consumer to a link that requests personal information supposedly required to collect it.
By quickly registering for the Protective Registration Service and paying the administration fee of â11.75, you can prevent a thief from obtaining credit, goods and other services in your name. A CIFAS warning will then be placed against your address for your own protection. CIFAS members will see this warning when searching against your address and will refer any credit applications for further investigation. Although this may cause delays when you apply for credit, it will prevent fraudsters from causing further damage to your credit rating.
Card Credit Mobile Service This scam is intended to trick consumers into disclosing their personal and financial data, including identity, banking and credit card number information. Frequently, the goal is identity theft allowing the thief to impersonate the true owner. Such schemes which operate through the Internet are called "phishing."
- A PCA's employees may not contact the taxpayer at any unusual time or place, or at a time or place that the PCA should know to be inconvenient, without a taxpayer's prior consent. Generally, no contacts will be made earlier than 8 a.m. or later than 9 p.m. local time at the taxpayer's location.
- PCA employees may not suggest or imply that the taxpayer's failure to pay the tax debt may affect the taxpayer's credit rating or that the unpaid tax debt may be reported to a credit bureau.
- A PCA is subject to a lawsuit by a taxpayer for damages if it fails to observe all of the Internal Revenue Code's protections for taxpayer rights in the collection process. PCAs enjoy no special immunity from being sued while working for the IRS.
- PCAs are subject to Taxpayer Assistance Orders issued by the National Taxpayer Advocate to the same extent as the IRS.
Card Credit Discover Service In addition to internet contacts, there have also been instances where taxpayers were contacted over the telephone by a person impersonating an IRS employee.
The National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) out of having their IRS accounts serviced by a private collection agency. Under the law, taxpayers may instruct a private collection agency to return their account to the IRS for service. Instructions must be in writing and a copy of the letter should be sent to the IRS. The private collection agency is responsible for returning all of the taxpayer's records and information to the IRS. The NTEU has published a sample letter on its web site at www.nteuIRSwatch.org.

If taxpayers get one of these contacts claiming to be from the IRS, you can bet it's not legitimate. Dont be taken in," he warned.
Credit reference agency Experian has warned that consumers who don't register to vote could be refused access to credit such as personal loans.

Recent investigations by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) have identified sites hosting more than two dozen IRS-related phishing scams. These scam Web sites have been located in at least 20 different countries, including Argentina, Aruba, Australia, Austria, Canada, Chile, China, England, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Poland, Singapore and Slovakia, as well as the United States.
