IRS Warning Taxpayers About New Email Scams

If you have an email account, you know about all the scam emails you get. Scammers are getting braver and using the IRS name in their new tactics.

The publication also warns taxpayers that they are entitled to deduct only the fair market value of the car, which may be less than the "blue book" value from a used car guide. According to the IRS, some fundraisers have mistakenly advised all their donors to use the full value listed in a used car guide in every instance. To withstand IRS scrutiny, donors can use IRS Publication 561, Determining the Value of Donated Property, to calculate the value of a donated car.

Credit First Service Union The IRS has begun warning taxpayers that it is seeing a surge in tax scam emails. Many of the emails even have the hubris to use the IRS name! Brave souls, indeed. Regardless, the scams seem to fall in the area of identity theft through phishing tactics.

Over the years a steady drumbeat of warnings about credit repair scams have come from the Federal Trade Commission, state Attorneys General, AARP, and Call For Action. Despite these warnings, tens of thousands of consumers over the years, probably desperate to improve their credit reports, have turned to credit repair clinics.

Card Credit Mobile Service First and foremost, you should understand that the IRS does NOT send emails to taxpayers. Never, never, never! If you get an email from the IRS, it is a fake. Unconditionally! Do not respond to it under any circumstances. Do not click links in the body of the email. Take one action and one action only - delete it!

  • A PCA's employees may not contact the taxpayer at any unusual time or place, or at a time or place that the PCA should know to be inconvenient, without a taxpayer's prior consent. Generally, no contacts will be made earlier than 8 a.m. or later than 9 p.m. local time at the taxpayer's location.
  • PCA employees may not suggest or imply that the taxpayer's failure to pay the tax debt may affect the taxpayer's credit rating or that the unpaid tax debt may be reported to a credit bureau.
  • A PCA is subject to a lawsuit by a taxpayer for damages if it fails to observe all of the Internal Revenue Code's protections for taxpayer rights in the collection process. PCAs enjoy no special immunity from being sued while working for the IRS.
  • PCAs are subject to Taxpayer Assistance Orders issued by the National Taxpayer Advocate to the same extent as the IRS.

Card Credit Discover Service Since the turn of the year, the IRS has identified 99 new email scams targeted at taxpayers. All of the scams are aimed at bilking you out of your private information. Most try to do this by claiming your must provide information or your will not receive your tax refund. In some cases, the fake emails threaten you with an audit. Again, this is all false information.

The National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) out of having their IRS accounts serviced by a private collection agency. Under the law, taxpayers may instruct a private collection agency to return their account to the IRS for service. Instructions must be in writing and a copy of the letter should be sent to the IRS. The private collection agency is responsible for returning all of the taxpayer's records and information to the IRS. The NTEU has published a sample letter on its web site at www.nteuIRSwatch.org.

There, they find a site that appears for all intensive purposes to be the one published by the IRS. Make no mistake - this means nothing. Anyone can copy and republish a site. Yes, even the site of the IRS. It is pretty scary when you think about it. Best Buy, in fact, had major problems with this for some time.

Credit card fraud is not a new crime. In fact, scams involving stolen credit cards began long before the Internet age. The art of trying to make money illegally (and by doing as little work as possible) is no longer a "cottage industry." Credit card fraud, telephone scams and various other forms of identity fraud — both online and through other means — have become big business.

Instead, the IRS has tracked most of the scamming emails to other countries, but not necessarily the usual suspects. The countries include England, Italy, Japan, Germany, Australia and Singapore. Usual suspects include China, Aruba, Mexico, Indonesia and Argentina. Surprisingly, only a few have originated from the scam mecca of Nigeria.

If you get an email purportedly from the IRS, it is a fake. If you have a nagging doubt, call the agency to find out if anything is up. Otherwise, delete that email!
