Credit unions exist not only worldwide, but also in each of the 50 U.S. states. By definition, a credit union is a cooperative financial institution that is owned and controlled by its members. Credit unions differ from banks and other financial institutions in that the members who have accounts in the credit union are the owners of the credit union.1 Some experts say that about one half of the nation's credit unions offer secured credit cards to members, many of which may offer lower interest rates.2
Credit First Service Union In an extraordinary restraint of free speech, a Texas judge has issued a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) that forbids a Northern California union from making any truthful statements about a company involved in a current labor dispute. In response, SEIU Local 250 has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit today in the US District Court of Northern California.
But the move sparked an uproar in the credit industry, as two of the three national credit reporting agencies (CRAs) Loan's use of credit scores. Loan ultimately prevailed when California passed a state law, sponsored by State Sen. Liz Figueroa, requiring lenders to provide California mortgage and home equity applicants with the score used in their loan decision. The law also required Equifax, Experian and Trans Union to disclose credit scores to consumers who requested them.
Card Credit Mobile Service On Dec. 15, 1999, Alameda County-based TeleCare Corporation and its subsidiary, Texas Mental Health Services of Texas, Inc. filed suit in Tarrant County, TX, against Local 250 and obtained the TRO. Attorneys in California representing Local 250 were given 45 minutes notice to appear in Texas to defend the union.
