Credit First Service Union (AXcess News) San Francisco - The U.S. Labor Department has filed a $1.2 million suit against California Health Benefit Fund over unpaid health care claims due more than 2,000 workers and their families nationwide.
(AXcess News) The U.S. Department of Labor has obtained a judgment requiring the Service and Business Workers of America Local 125, located in Juno Beach, Fla., to pay $11 million in unpaid health claims owed to union members and their families. The judgment also bars the union from service as a fiduciary to any employee benefit plan in the future. "This union local was a sham organization running a scheme that preyed on workers needing health care benefits, " said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "Our legal action in this case will restore money owed to the plan so that these workers and their families can count on their health care benefits in the future."

Card Credit Discover Service The lawsuit, filed in the Atlanta Division of the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Georgia, alleges the trustees of IUPIW, which purported to be a union-sponsored benefit plan, imprudently managed the fund. Marketed nationwide, the fund covers employees in two affiliated unions, the International Union of Petroleum and Industrial Workers (also IUPIW) and the International Union of Industrial and Independent Workers (IUIIW).

Credit Public Service Union In addition to restitution, the suit seeks to bar officials associated with the health care fund from service as fiduciaries to plans covered by federal benefits law. The Labor Department also asks the court to appoint an independent fiduciary to take over and manage the plan. Named in the suit are plan trustees William Hope of La Habra, Calif.; Gary Couch of Arlington, Texas; Roger "Tim" Gue of San Jacinto, Calif.; and Robby Larkin of Fort Mohave, Ariz. Pamela Barlow of Fullerton, Calif., secretary-treasurer of the IUPIW, is also named in the suit. Barlow is the daughter of George Beltz of Gainsville, Mo., president of both IUPIW unions and sister of Geoffrey "Joe" Beltz, of Bedford, Texas, president of the IUIIW.
