States Mercury Task Force Urges Stricter Standards

Credit Pacific Service Union The two leading sources of mercury contaminating New Jersey's fish are smelters that melt down old cars and coal-fired power plants, according to a 4-year-old state task force studying the toxic metal.

77% of voters from the Royal Mail's Communication Workers Union (CWU) are in support of a national postal workers' strike. 2006 Apacs advises consumers to check credit reports Apacs has published a new report urging British consumers to check their credit reports. The new guide provides consumers with information on exactly what credit reports are, why they are important and the type of information that a credit reference agency may use when drafting the report.

Credit First Service Union The state's Mercury Task Force on Thursday released a report urging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to enact strict new regulations that reduce mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants. It also recommended manufacturers stop making switches and other products out of mercury.

Unfortunately, credit card companies offering lower typical APRs (Annual Percentage Rate) tend to have stricter credit check systems and are more likely to reject your application. With the uSwitch.com credit card comparison service you can compare the credit cards available that will accept applications from people with poor credit check results (or credit ratings). This will save you the hassle of having your applications rejected, which can also show up as a bad sign in future credit checks.

Card Credit Mobile Service Dr. Michael Gochfeld, chairman of the task force, said the EPA is slated to propose new air emissions standards in December 2003. If the federal rules are delayed, or if they don't go far enough, New Jersey should enact its own standards, he said.

Card Credit Discover Service Coal naturally contains small amounts of mercury that is released into the air when the coal is burned to generate electricity, Gochfeld said.

For example, we use an outside shipping company (the United States Postal Service) to ship orders, and a credit card processing company to bill users for goods and services.

Credit Public Service Union Most of the mercury from New Jersey's six coal-fired power plants settles near the source, although there is evidence it can travel around the world, he said.

Card Credit Processing Service Mercury is mostly of concern when it settles into water and gets converted into methyl mercury at the bottom of bays, lakes and streams, where it works its way up the food chain into fish that people eat, he said. Mercury poses a particular danger to fetuses whose mothers eat tainted fish, potentially lowering the child's IQ and causing developmental problems.

Center Credit Service Union From 10 to 20 percent of pregnant women in New Jersey are exposed to unsafe levels of mercury, mostly from eating fish, according to the task force report.

Card Credit Service Wireless Fish at the top of the food chain, such as swordfish and mako shark, can contain 10 million times the level of mercury in the water where they live, so pregnant women are warned to avoid them. The state regularly issues advisories about fish in certain bodies of water being unsafe to eat, and Gochfeld said pregnant women shouldn't have more than one fish meal per week.

Credit Security Service Union The only coal-fired power plant in the Atlantic City area is Conectiv's B.L. England Generating Station in the Beesleys Point section of Upper Township in Cape May County.

Credit Report Service Conectiv spokeswoman Betty Kennedy said mercury emissions are directly related to the region's electricity use, but the company would do whatever is needed to comply with state and federal regulations.

Blogspot Com Christian Conectiv's new generation of power plants will burn natural gas, a much cleaner fuel than coal, she said. The company plans to build 4,000 megawatts of natural gas burning plants in the Mid-Atlantic region during the next four years.

Christian Counseling Credit Mercury emissions from coal burning plants are second only to emissions from auto recyclers, who melt down old vehicles for steel and iron, according to the task force.

Credit Federal Service Union The smelter problem was discovered because New Jersey, one of the few states that has tried to assess mercury levels and protect the public, started monitoring emissions from smokestacks at smelting operations, said Gochfeld, a professor of environmental and community health at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in New Brunswick.

Credit Monitoring Service Bob Shinn, commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection, unveiled a plan on Thursday to reduce mercury emissions from smelters.

Credit Division Service Shinn announced new mercury recycling partnership program with auto-shredding facilities, auto and scrap metal recyclers, and other industries to remove mercury from items being recycled before they are melted. In cars, for example, the mercury is limited to switches for interior lights and headlights.

Card Credit Online Service Most uses of mercury have been phased out in this country, but it is still found in blood-pressure cuffs and electrical switches.

Consumer Counseling Credit Inc The task force, which included a few dozen scientists, environmentalists and industry and government representatives, was criticized by environmental groups Thursday for not urging strong state regulations to reduce mercury emissions.

Card Credit Fleet Service New Jersey already has the nation's strictest emissions rules for garbage incinerators, and there's no reason it can't do the same thing for smelters and power plants, said David Pringle, campaign director for the New Jersey Environmental Federation.

Card Consolidation Credit He said it's unlikely the Bush administration will tighten air emissions standards, so New Jersey is threatening the public's health by not taking action on its own.

Credit Free Online Report Bill Wolfe, policy director for the Sierra Club's New Jersey chapter agreed.

Credit Federal First Service "Given the seriousness of the issue, DEP needs to develop mandatory emissions reductions standards for major mercury sources within the next 12 months," Wolfe said.
