Credit Pacific Service Union Washington, D.C. New Jersey Environmental Federation (NJEF) welcomed today's announcement of an impending phase-out of the wood treatment chemical Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) for commercial use.

Credit First Service Union Over the last several months, NJEF has led a consumer awareness campaign that mobilized 1,850 consumers in New Jersey to send letters to major retailers Home Depot and Lowe's asking both local stores and national headquarters to remove CCA-treated wood from their shelves and offer alternatives. It was part of a national effort by NJEF's parent organization, Clean Water Action, which generated over 20,000 letters nationwide.

Card Credit Mobile Service "We are relieved that the wood preserving industry recognizes that consumers don't need or want arsenic-treated wood," said Jane Nogaki, NJEF's Pesticide Program Coordinator, "though we remain concerned that the treated wood is still exempt from hazardous waste disposal requirements." CCA-treated wood was given a hazardous waste exemption before it was clear that arsenic and chromium leach from the wood. The 75 billion board feet of CCA-treated wood currently in use will continue to threaten groundwater if they are disposed of in unlined landfills.

Gardner, now an attorney in Dallas, Texas, said the only organization he knows that ethically helps consumers is First Stone Credit Counseling (FSCC), ¹⁸⁹ and its affiliate company, the People's Credit Bureau (PCB).¹⁹⁰ Based in Dallas, the two companies are run by Bruce J. Danielson, a former pilot and military veteran. Danielson said First Stone is the only Consumer Advocate Credit Counseling organization in the country because it helps the consumers organize their matters and clean up their credit reports.

Credit Public Service Union Other NJEF activities included: participation in efforts urging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Consumer Product Safety Commission to review the health impacts of CCA; work with local and state officials for restrictions; wood sampling and press events to release the November 2001 report, The Poisonwood Rivals. NJEF organized a door-to-door letter writing campaign in 17 towns and 9 counties through our Belmar and Montclair field offices.

Arsenic is known to cause skin, lung and bladder cancer and is linked to diabetes, heart disease and other health effects.
