Jet Skis To Be Temporarily Banned From National Parks

Credit Pacific Service Union Starting Sept. 15, visitors will be able to bring their suntan lotion, swimsuits and boats to Lake Powell, but not their personal watercraft. Personal watercraft will be banned from Lake Powell, as well as Lake Mead and six other national parks with water features, until the National Park Service completes environmental impact statements, which in the case of Lake Powell is expected out sometime in the summer of 2003.

The National Park Service is expected to decide in November whether to ban snowmobiles. The snowmobile industry said the environmental agency's study did not consider data from manufacturers. Yellowstone, the world's oldest national park, covers 2.2 million acres from the northwest corner of Wyoming into southern Montana and eastern Idaho. The 310, acre Grand Teton park is south of Yellowstone.

Many aspects of environmental protection in these resorts are controlled by Parks Canada. For example, there is no commercial snowmobiling in the Parks, no dog sledding, you have to leave the Park to take part in these activities. The ski areas in the Park have strict limitations on development.

Center Credit Service Union In March of 2000, the Park Service published its long-awaited rules on the use of PWCs, which allowed for their continued use at Lake Powell, subject to possible restrictions.

Card Credit Service Wireless The Bluewater Network, San Francisco-based environmental group that is also spearheading the ban on snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park, sued the Park Service in August of 2000 alleging failure to include the proper NEPA analysis and public comment on the PWC decision-making process. In September of 2000, the Park Service began negotiating with Bluewater on its lawsuit. A settlement agreement was reached with Bluewater and approved in April of 2001.

Credit Security Service Union The agreement was that all park units that chose to authorize continued PWC use were required to complete a rulemaking process to authorize that use, which included an environmental impact statement. Eight park units with water features, including Lake Powell and Lake Mead, were given until Sept. 15 to complete the process.

Credit Report Service "Typically, it can take up to three years to complete an EIS," said Obergh. "We're trying to get this done on an accelerated schedule. If all goes well we'll have a final draft approved in April. If it does recommend continued use, then we'll have to put into place a special regulation for Lake Powell."

Blogspot Com Christian Over the holiday weekend, the Lake Powell PWC Action Task Force asked for and received approval from the Park Service to dispense information and collect signatures at the Wahweap Marina in support of continued use.

Christian Counseling Credit "I think what people have to realize is that this is not just about PWCs," said Hancock. "If Bluewater Network succeeds, its next step is to ban boats, then it's their plan to drain the lake.

Credit Federal Service Union "Even though the ban doesn't start until Sept. 15, we're already seeing the results here in Page. People are making arrangements to go other places where they can use their personal watercraft."

Credit Monitoring Service A phone call to Bluewater Network on Wednesday afternoon was not returned by press time.

Credit Division Service The preliminary draft, said Obergh, will be out sometime in September. There will then be a 60-day public comment period, after which a final draft plan will be written, which will include a recommendation for a preferred alternative. This draft, too, will be open to a 60-day comment period. The final draft will then be written and, as she said, if all goes well will be out in April.

Card Credit Online Service Owner of PWCs stored on houseboats and boats on the lake, said Obergh, will not be required to remove them, "they simply won't be able to use them."

Consumer Counseling Credit Inc So, as it stands now, PWCs will be banned from the lake for at least eight months. During that time the Park Service will be asking the public to review the drafts and comments.
