Allergies: food vs. airborne vs contact

I N T R O D U C T I O N Diagnosing and treating a dog for something that sounds as simple as itchy skin may actually be quite complex. In dogs, itchiness (or pruritus) may be manifested by licking, scratching, or rubbing the affected area. If the ears are pruritic (itchy), the dog may shake his head and/or scratch his ears. Anal pruritus may cause the dog to scoot his hindquarters along the rug in attempt to scratch the area under the tail. Not only are there many possible direct causes of pruritus, but there may be secondary problems which can cause the skin to be even more pruritic than the primary ones. In order to be successful in treating the dog s discomfort, the secondary problems must be addressed first. Only then can the underlying causes be adequately assessed. center credit service union

T Y P E S O F A L L E R G I E S The most common allergies that affect dogs are... 1. airborne (e.g. pollens, molds, etc.); 2. food (e.g. beef, corn, etc.); and 3. contact (e.g. wool, cotton, etc.) By definition, an allergy is a hypersensitivity to a particular substance to which most individuals would have little or no reaction at all. There are various manifestations of allergic reactions, based on various complex internal mechanisms. consumer counseling credit inc

Airborne Allergies

Allergies to airborne substances are the most common type of allergies in dogs. Depending on the allergens that affect an individual dog, the allergic reactions may occur seasonally, randomly, or continuously. Common allergens are pollens and mold spores of various types; dust mites and other insects or insect parts; skin or hair flakes (dander) from various animals (or humans ); dried saliva particles (which is the most common cat allergen causing reactions in sensitive humans); and other minute airborne substances. card credit fleet service

  • licking, chewing, or gnawing of toes, nail beds, pads, and/or webbed interdigital areas (also common with food allergies) center credit family service

  • licking, scratching, or recurrent infections of inguinal (groin) skin, axillary (under-arm) skin, and/or fronts of the elbows and hock joints, with or withOUT noticeable redness or other visible skin abnormality to begin with (although the fur may be stained pinkish-brown from chronic licking). These signs, too, are common with food allergies. credit reporting service

  • A rash or redness of the skin areas mentioned above may also be seen, sometimes with thickened, corrugated looking skin. With time, the skin may develop a dark pigment because of the chronic inflammation. This appearance is not specifically diagnostic of airborne allergies; it may also be seen with food or contact allergies, in addition to a host of other primary and secondary skin disorders. cca credit division service

Airborne or inhalant allergies (often referred to as Atopy by veterinarians) usually do not begin until 1 1/2 to 2 years of age, although this is not carved in stone. An early presumptive (tentative) diagnosis may be made on the basis of the dog s clinical signs. As Dr. Danny Scott, a well-known dermatologist at Cornell, often told his students: This is an itch that rashes rather than a rash that itches. The application of this statement to inhalant allergies is that their earliest sign in a dog is itchiness (pruritus) without anything at all visibly wrong with the skin. The dog may lick or rub or chew or shake his ears, but an owner that closely examines the skin under the fur will often see absolutely nothing! Almost every abnormality (or rash, as Dr. Scott so eloquently describes) that occurs later is secondary to self-trauma or to a change in the local skin environment: e.g. excessive moisture from saliva; change in the numbers of bacteria or yeast organisms on the skin surface; abrasions from scratching; bacterial hair follicle infections; etc. credit free report service

The specific substances (allergens) that cause reactions in an individual dog are diagnosed most accurately by means of a skin test. This procedure involves injecting, with a tiny needle, minute quantities of thirty or so individual substances that are frequent offenders in allergic dogs. The test grades the dog s reactivity to each substance. Once the most highly allergenic substances are identified, they can be combined into a mixture (referred to as allergy serum ) that is taylored to that individual dog. Using a process termed hyposensitization, a series of gradually increasing doses of injected allergy serum is used to reduce the dog s response to the substances that trigger his allergic reactions. Approximately 3/4 of inhalant allergic dogs who go on a program of hyposensitization respond positively to the injections. Of those who respond positively, approximately half are able to discontinue most, if not all, their symptomatic allergy medications. card credit customer discover

Toy Dogs

T oy breeds were specifically bred to be human companions -- frequently for the royalty of their native lands. Before the days of central heating, a warm furry body made a pleasant heater for hands or laps. Breeds such as the Pekingese and Pug originated in China and were the treasured companions of Emperors and Buddhist priests. 1st credit federal service

Other toy breeds are smaller versions of dogs belonging to the sporting, terrier and hound groups. As civilization advanced and machines gave humans more leisure time, breeds like the Italian Greyhound and Toy Poodle were developed to provide people with indoor pets that were also considered to be status symbols. credit paychex service tax

Most toy breeds are hardy dogs with a longer-than-average life span. They are usually timid with strangers and many are not particularly fond of unfamiliar children. Many are strong willed and will enjoy being bullies if permitted. Toy dogs usually make good watchdogs, although some can be too yappy . credit service tax

Most toy breeds are less than 12 inches tall and weigh less than 12 pounds. The most popular toy breeds in the US are the Toy Poodle, Pomeranian and Yorkshire Terrier. Other familiar toy breeds include the Chihuahua, Shih Tzu, and Maltese. aeon credit service

Since these breeds are easily mass produced by puppy mills, they are frequently seen for sale in pet stores. Since puppy mill dogs are bred with no concern for breed quality, temperament and receive little or no socialization, they are usually problematic pets. Sometimes toy breeds are crossed to produce - poo dogs (such as Cock-a-poos). These are not purebred dogs and should never be purchased as such. credit one service union

Sporting Country / Date of origin: Germany / early 19th century Breed Group - Weimaraner Club of America Rescue Group - Rebecca Weimer, (618)236-1466, Illinois The Weimaraner is an all-around hunter that was bred by aristocratic sportsmen in the Weimar region of Germany. It was jealously guarded and no dogs were sold outside the close knit circle of nobility in the Weimar court. It was most likely created by crossing a Bloodhound type dog with German Shorthaired Pointers to get hunters with a better nose and a larger size. This enabled them to hunt larger game such as wild boar. credit financial service

In 1929, an American named Howard Knight got a pair of dogs ostensibly for breeding purposes, but the Germans had secretly neutered them. These were later replaced with fertile dogs and the breed, amidst a great public relations campaign, flourished in the states. The short haired variety was admitted to the American Kennel Club in 1943 but the long haired variety is still unrecognized here. card citibank credit customer

It is an excellent cattle drover and vermin router. Although it has been interbred with the Pembroke Corgi since the 19th century, it does not have the same ancestors. The Cardigan has Dachshunds and farm Collies in its background and the Pembroke descended from northern Spitz type droving dogs. credit report service
