The Old Schools New School

The Old Schools New School

Author: Bill Weir
Some yacht clubs are governed by stuffy and exclusive members who look down on windsurfers as ragged, unworthy, ill-mannered surf-scum. The Saint Francis Yacht Club, on the other hand, takes a completely different view. Although prestigious and steeped in tradition, the Saint Francis has embraced the sport of windsurfing as a fully legitimate form of yacht racing. Over the last 10 years in particular, the Saint Francis has become a leading organizer and promoter of a variety of windsurfing regattas in the Bay Area.

Credit Pacific Service Union Founded in 1927, the club presides at the water's edge of the San Francisco city front just downwind from Crissy Field. This unique location allows many races to be run right from the deck of the clubhouse. In addition to the Friday Night Racing Series from April through September, annual events include The Bay Challenge, The Bay Classic/UltraNectar Challenge (both long-distance events) and The Pacific Coast Championships (course/slalom). As always, both open class and one-design racing are supported.

They've run racing for virtually every type of sailboat, from local to world championship fleets, and sailors from the club have collected almost every major yachting trophy at one time or another. Right now, the United States' best chance for regaining the America's Cup from New Zealand is the Saint Francis Yacht Club-sponsored America One, skippered by Bay Area native Paul Cayard.

By working with school systems, Glide courses include academic tests which are recognized as, and can qualify for, school credit.

Card Credit Mobile Service For competitive windsurfers in the Bay Area, access to the world-class racing provided by The Saint Francis Yacht Club has engendered both an extremely competitive local flet and a host of individual national champions. Keep your eyes out for the 2000 racing schedule and head to San Francisco for some epic racing.
