Among the consumer benefits afforded by our national credit system are efficient and convenient access to credit and insurance, strong competition in the financial services marketplace, and lower costs of credit."372
Card Credit Processing Service Barbara Welling, CWA local 9413 President in Reno Nevada said, "SBC wants to shift the monthly cost of health care premiums to our employees, and retirees."While health care costs are a major concern to industry, since the California Grocers strike, corporate eyes have been paying close attention to those issues and how they're being handled. But few have attempted to include retirees. Even Safeway (NYSE: SWY) and Kroger (NYSE: KR) did not include retired workers.
Center Credit Service Union According to Welling SBC spends $7,000 per employee annually on health care premiums in a self-insured plan that's currently administered by United Health Care. The CWA itself has no say in negotiating the health benefit plan offered employees, nor in selecting its administrator, even though the plan itself is a self-insurer policy.
Card Credit Service Wireless The company claimed that health care costs were $3 billion dollars in 2003, which would put SBC's cost-per-employee at $17,500, three times the amount the CWA claims is paid for benefits.

Now that SBC has been approved for long distance service, union members have grown concerned about whether the company will move jobs to a central location. Local 9413 wants assurances that members jobs are not eliminated in Nevada through any consolidation of those services.
Credit Federal Service Union The SBC/CWA contract is the largest labor agreement in the United States being negotiated this year. In Nevada, CWA Local 9413 has 678 members, 600 of which are SBC employees.
Credit Monitoring Service The national union and SBC have agreed to continue negotiating in San Antonio with the help of a federal mediator past the Saturday night deadline.CWA President Morton Bahr has warned he may issue a 30-day strike notice in April if talks fail to progress.On March 10, SBC Chairman, Edward Whitacre sold 303,580 shares for $24.34, netting $7,389,137 in that sale. On February 27 Whitacre bought 235,348 shares for $24.01, at a cost of $5,650,705. Following Whitacre in sales on March 10 were two executive vice presidents, James Kahan, who sold 25,000 for $24.34, netting $608,500 in that sale, and, Karen Jennings, who sold 7,500 shares for $24.34, netting her $182,550 in that sale.Shares of SBC closed Friday at $24.87, up $0.14 or 0.57%, on volume of 8,220,200 shares. The 90-day average daily volume was reported to be 10,673,318 shares.
